If you ask ten people in Bangalore where the red light area is, most of them will say Majestic. It is the one name that always comes up. It is also the answer that needs the most explaining, because Majestic is not a red light area in the way Kamathipura is.

Why this name and not another

It is the transport, not the neighbourhood. Majestic is where the whole state arrives. Buses come in from every district through the night, the metro runs underneath it, and the railway station is a ten minute walk away. Around any junction like that you get the same three things — cheap rooms, food at 2 AM, and a crowd nobody keeps track of.

That combination is what people are pointing at when they say Majestic. It has been true of big bus terminals in every Indian city for fifty years. It is not something specific to Bangalore, and it is not a decision anybody made.

What the law makes of it

Selling sex is not itself a crime in India. The Supreme Court has said plainly that sex work is a profession and that the people in it are entitled to the same protection of law as anyone else. What the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956 makes an offence is the structure around it — running a brothel, living off another person's earnings, and soliciting in a public place.

Majestic is about as public a place as exists in Bangalore. That is the whole reason nothing there is settled or signposted. A spot that gets known gets raided, and then it is somewhere else three streets over. Anyone who tells you a specific lane is describing last year.

The honest warning

Three things go wrong at Majestic often enough that they are worth stating flatly.

Raids do not sort people out. Everyone standing there when it happens gets taken in, and explaining afterwards that you were only walking past is not a conversation you want to have.

Theft near the bus stand is quick and practised. Phone and wallet, usually inside the first two minutes, and there is realistically no complaint to be made afterwards.

And the reason the 1956 Act exists at all is trafficking. A junction that busy is exactly where women get moved to and held. A good number of the people you would meet on that street are not standing there by choice, and that is not a small detail.

The simplest point about Majestic

Nobody actually has to go there. The question behind this search is a question about a place, and a place is the hardest possible way to answer it. Somebody comes to you instead, you already know her face and her rate, and the bus stand never enters into it.
